According to the workshop manual (Issue 2) there should be only ½"(13mm) free movement of the brake pedal before the piston in the master cylinder
begins to move. The clearance can be felt and observed if the pedal is moved by hand. (Provided you are flexible enough to lie on your side in the footwell!)
The actuating rod between the pedal and the piston is adjustable in length, although this was set when the car was built and should never need adjustment - however, who knows whether it has been altered since?
In fact, I had this problem after removing the master cylinder to have it re-sleeved. While it was away being repaired I managed to mix up the clutch and brake actuating rods which (for reasons I do not understand) were different lengths. I can attest to the fact that it is incredibly difficult to adjust these rods in situ. (Its difficult enough just to photograph them)
