Norwich 2012

The Register's traditional Norwich weekend (8-9 Sept) took a slightly different form this year, with the omission of the Norwich showground event. As usual Lou and John Shorten held open house on Saturday, where visitors were able to see John's workshop with restoration in progress, and Lou's amazing spare-parts sheds. The afternoon drive of previous years was replaced with a walking treasure-hunt around Lenwade, organized by John and Cynthia Harris. This was hotly contested (and enjoyed), but eventually won through sheer determination by Mark and Steven Bunce

On Sunday we assembled at Bressingham Steam museum and gardens, near Diss and about 30 miles from Lenwade. This is a large and well-stocked privately owned garden with the addition of a steam engine museum and narrow-gauge steam railway, so plenty to cater for all interests. We were given our own grass parking area next to the gardens, with some welcome shade provided by trees - it was unusually warm for September, although there was a refreshing breeze. The total of around 15 cars included Lou and John's, Mike Laflin's supercharged Varitone, and visitors from the Netherlands. There was no particular programme for the day, leaving plenty of time for leisurely picnic lunches, conversation, admiring the display of new-style regalia, and of course exploring the attractions, before most departed at about 4pm. Attendance over the weekend was admittedly lower than usual, partly due to advance publicity being somewhat late, but those who did make it all seemed to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings at Bressingham.
