This Varitone, known as "Yasmin", has been owned by Malcolm Eades since December 1972, so it's not so much car ownership as a deep personal relationship! Originally grey over grey, she was rebuilt in 1994 and resprayed beige over maroon. Originally used daily in the seventies, she now only comes out for pleasure trips. She gets around a bit so she has a 1622cc engine with a gearbox upgrade planned: she's been as far south as Umbria in Italy and as far north west as the Harz mountains in (East) Germany. She is also featured in Anders Clausager's MG Saloons as well as some magazine articles, one of them a very early Classic Cars feature, before she was restored, when she was used to show where all the rust comes through. Webmaster Günter's car was already restored then (by the late Bob Bonthrone) and was used in the same article to show how good the finished job looks.

I purchased this car on the 4th December 201. The car is unbelievably solid underneath and all round and has escaped the ravages of time. Leather interior is all original and there are just 40800 genuine miles on the clock. Previous owner had a wire wheel conversion in the 80's and mounted a wood rimmed steering wheel ...no forgiveness for the steering wheel and I am in the process of converting back to an original wheel. Trafficators all work superbly and there are no flashing indicator lights. There has also been an alternator and negative earth conversion to which I will be reversing back to dynamo and positive earth.

I have been a register member since June 1982 when I bought this Twilight Grey ZA from the original owner. Now I have owned the car longer than he did and added a few small adventures. The car was registered in Gosport where I bought it and has resided in the Worthing area since then. Restoration work was done by the Shortens in the late 80s and has served over the years both as family transport and of the focus of summer outings when our sons were small. In the 90s the car was seen regularly at register events when I served as first competition secretary then chair of the register. Her last overseas trip was to the Champagne region for our 25th anniversary, and we have added 10 more years of very little use since then! She doesn t get out much these days, but she makes a once a year pilgrimage to the Goodwood Revival in September, surely the biggest period fancy dress party in the world. The picture is from the 2009 event. Steve Adlem

This vehicle was extensively rebuilt in 1991/2 cannabalising a ZA to do so. It has MGA front disc brakes, electronic ignition, negative earth conversion and vacuum brake booster. It is in excellent body and structural condition although engine, gearbox and rear axle are beginning to sound their age! It now belongs to Richard Jordan in West Sussex. The engine serial number is interesting: BP15N/1213; where in the Magnette scheme of things does the 'N' come in unless it is from a Manumatic equipped car?

It was first purchased by a lady who lived in Paris. It was first registered in Abingdon and sent over to Paris and was driven by an Aunt of ours who worked for it’s owner, who was an English ex-pat – hence the RHD. It was re-registered in France and as far as I know had French registration plates fitted. When the lady died, my Aunt inherited the car and eventually bought it home to Sidmouth where she was based in the UK. My Aunt wanted to use the car – it was still very serviceable – and so had to register it again for UK use. I recall that she could not get the old UK number back on the car and so was given an ‘M’ suffix plate.
My Dad had his own garage in Staffordshire and was very interested in the car. He asked my Aunt to give him first refusal should she ever wish to part with it and she agreed. I think it was in late 1981 that he eventually purchased the car from her, I do not know how much he paid for it. I was 20 or so at the time and was – as I still am - interested in cars.
I recall the car being in basically very sound condition. I think it needed some welding underneath, but no paint work. As it had been run and used all its life it showed signs of age but nothing serious. We (Dad and I did much of the work on Saturday afternoons together) had new carpets made, they were a good quality ‘wilton’ made by a local coach trimmer. We took off various black painted parts – the airbox etc – and sent them to be stove enamelled. The rear bumper was a bit bent and along with the irons, had to put back into shape, I think it and the front were re-chromed as well. We took the radiator shell to Sheffield to have a dent knocked out and re-plated. All pretty much standard fayre for a car of that era that had been in daily use for 25 years.
I do remember that when I took the carpets out of the boot, the original pressed aluminium number plates (from Abingdon) were sandwiched between the carpet and the sound proofing felt and that they had left an imprint in the carpet. I don’t recall what happened to them.
Dad could not get the original number back from DVLA by then and so found an old Triumph Herald that was a rust bucket and took the number off that. Dad’s name was Neville Taylor.
The photos attached are from June 1982, That is Dad and a very longstanding employee at his garage.  It was a lovely solid car to drive, it had the original radio in it with light and a needle and what felt like damped knobs. It was not concours but it was a lovely clean and honest car to take out on high days and holidays. Dad died in late 1983 we sold the car a man in Cheltenham. David Taylor

He kept the car for the rest of his life, I believe it has covered less than 30000 miles and had some restoration work done in the late 80s, he sadly passed away in the mid 90s when his wife covered the car up in the garage and was not used again.
