Yorkshire weekend 5-6th September 2023
As might be expected for a typical British summer, we had rather cool and damp weather, and not just in Yorkshire ! This possibly accounted for the low number of Magnettes, and also the AGM originally planned for Sun 6th had been rescheduled to take place on the Norwich weekend.
Heavy rain on Saturday morning did actually ease off for the visit to Leeming Bar station on the Wensleydale Railway. The station is just off the A1, on the original single-carriageway Great North Road, and we had a very warm welcome from the volunteer staff both there and at Scruton station, immaculately dressed in early 20th-century style. They gave us a tour of the recently restored buildings which have been ‘dressed’ with as much attention to detail as the costumes.
Also nice to see John & Gwen from Northern Ireland, taking in our weekend as part of an extended tour in their camper van. For the past 10 years or so John has been restoring a Varitone, now at the painting stage, and he was able to collect an impressive pile of spares from Peter Martin.
On Sunday the traditional visit to the Harrogate MG & Classic Car Club show at Pateley Bridge in the beautiful setting of Nidderdale was attended by several Magnette owners. However with uncertain weather again, there were only two Magnettes there, belonging to Ian Sykes and Peter Martin
I must have driven past the Wensleydale Railway many times without really noticing, so thanks to David Griffiths for bringing it to our attention and making arrangements there (as well as for the Pateley Bridge show), and do pay a visit if you’re in the area
