Harrogate MG Show 3-4 August 2019

Ee bah gum – what a perfect venue the Harrogate MGOC have found for their rally. Despite floods in parts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire, the River Nidd at Pateley Bridge was unaffected and Harrogate MG 2019 incorporating the MGOC Northern National was well and truly on, bigger and better than ever before.

On the Saturday Magnette owners both with and without their cars arrived on this spectacular site and all mingled and chatted until 5.30 pm when the Register AGM was held. A 50 mile run had been laid on for them but most of the early arrivals preferred to stay in Pateley Bridge which has many attractions to offer. The AGM was well attended and as usual the committee and officers received a vote of confidence and were elected to continue en-bloc.

In the beautiful evening with a cricket match in progress in the background, a fish & chip supper was devoured around the register gazebo. While we were all together Paul Batho took the opportunity to present Barrie & Sheila Hope with the David Johnson Award for the most notable journey – namely their trip to Switzerland for the 2018 European Event of the Year where they clocked up over 2000 miles.

The Sunday weather forecast was for afternoon showers but the show had to go on and there was glorious sunshine in the morning. Musical entertainment was provided by the Knaresborough Silver Band and Caribbean Breeze. With a large central location our stand had 10 Magnettes on display accompanied by a Y-type and a 1934 PA. Altogether an impressive display with chrome gleaming in the sun and it attracted many visitors. In addition there were many Magnette owners without their cars for various reasons but most welcome all the same. Anthony White took his immaculate Rover 75, 18 years old and owned from new with just 30,000 miles on the clock. This was displayed in the main ring as a guest.

Paul Batho had copies of his book and signed copies were selling like hot cakes until he ran out of stock. Our own cars were judged by Anthony White & Keith Wilson who awarded Colin & Ella Goldsworthy winners of the NTG Trophy, while the votes for the car most people would like to take home went to Jorian Tuxworth. There was no prize for the furthest travelled but Peter Martin would have won hands down with a journey of 283 miles each way. Over the course of the weekend 11 Magnettes attended.

In the afternoon the main show prize-giving was brought forward to 3.00 pm and just as it finished rain spots encouraged an early departure although the rain stopped as quickly as it began.
Many thanks to Maureen Hallam of the Harrogate MGOC and also to David & Sandra Griffiths for their liaison on behalf of the Magnette Register.
