Goodwood Revival 2012
Two Magnettes showed up at the Goodwood Revival in September.
"Bumble" originally was a famous racing car in the 70's and 80's. This car in the right colours seems to be the other racer of the period named "Emma", but showing "Bumble". The other one is "Sambo".
Here's more information on Sambo (not yet approved by our hostorian):
1958 MG Magnette ZB Historic Race Car ‘Sambo’ Registration no. TBC 993 Arguably the longest serving race car on the Classic Saloons Championship register, started in 1975, ‘Sambo’ seems to be synonymous with Pre-‘60s saloon car racing. The original build of this car is attributed to none other than Roger Andreason of Chevron fame who built two MG Magnettes for the circuits, one for himself, and the other for his wife, Judy. Sambo’s survival has been due mainly to dedicated custodianship of past owners - each one of whom has contributed to its safe-keeping, remedial renovation or outright restoration. Therefore this great old warhorse seems to spring eternal - comfortably taking each and every race season of the past 30 years in its stride. That Sambo has twice been invited to contest the crowd- pleasing St Mary’s Trophy at the prestigious Goodwood Motor Circuit Revival Meeting (2002 & 2004) bears testimony on the reputation and status that this once humble MG family saloon holds in the historic car world. Apart from forays at Goodwood, Sambo continues to enjoy itself as a key player in the ‘Oldies but Goldies’ series, run by the innovative Top Hat Racing series. Currently fettled by MG marque specialists, Classic Cars of Kent, Sambo has recently received a detailed overhaul, which has included the fitting of a new close-ratio race gearbox, locked differential and a cylinder head check and refit. All safety equipment aspects were replaced at the same time, giving Sambo a new fire extinguisher system, race seat and harness plus a smart new Moto-Lita race wheel. During this health check, numerous minor jobs have also been attended to so that Sambo can be confidently described as truly ‘race ready’ - proved by two good showings in the Oldies but Goldies races at Castle Combe in April and Donington Park in May. This 1594cc, 130bhp car completed both long-distance events without incident, beating supposedly quicker MGB-powered Magnettes into the bargain. Road registered and with a new MoT issued, Sambo is also described as a well mannered and versatile doyen of historic racing - equally at home at a Sprint Meeting, Hillclimb or Road Rally as it is racing in the U.K or Europe. Whether being viewed by novice or experienced race drivers - no one can bring into question Sambo’s inherent heritage or usability, confirmed by many dashboard plaques and Scrutineer’s labels. Without doubt, Sambo is welcome to all Top Hat and Classic Saloon Car Club events as well as being a prime candidate for invitation when the pre-‘60s saloons invade the Goodwood Revival Paddock again in 2006.
